Lorina joined our Marketing & Communications team as a trainee in July 2024. In this interview, she talks about her first six months in the department.

Why did you decide to do a traineeship in this department?

I studied science of books book and German studies and have always wanted to work in the book industry, but was only focused on editing and publishing. Marketing and especially public relations weren't on my radar at first. I then came into contact with press and social media work for the first time during my compulsory internship for my university degree. I found it so interesting that I did another internship in communications the following year. When I had to choose between a Master's degree and a traineeship after completing my Bachelor's degree, I quickly decided to do a traineeship in this area.

What are your tasks?

To summarize: Simply learning a lot. Tasks such as drafting press releases, writing texts, developing and implementing ideas for content. During the Frankfurter Buchmesse, I was on site and went to various press events to see how things worked. This year, I'll also be attending the AVP annual conference and the Börsenverein's anniversary congress and I'm already looking forward to the program and meeting other people from the industry.

But alongside the events, there are of course also day-to-day office tasks, such as maintaining Excel lists or posting articles on the website and helping my colleagues with their tasks. One of my own projects, for example, was the communication support for the MVB Hackathon and the preparation for various digital channels.

What has been your highlight so far?

Although I've worked at FBM before, the book fair was still a highlight. I spent a few days on the grounds, experienced the normal hustle and bustle of the fair up close at the stand, visited various events and worked with the social media team. I also found it very exciting to experience the set-up in the halls and how everyone works together to get an entire stand up and running in a short amount of time. You also get to know the colleagues that you normally don't interact with often. It just feels different, because instead of working in the regular departments and teams, everyone is simply working together towards a successful and enjoyable fair. And then, of course, the receptions and after parties are also great.

But even apart from the extraordinary situation of the FBM, I enjoy the traineeship and I think that marketing and communication is just the right thing for anyone who likes to be creative and works well with other people.
