Market Data

Here you will find information on current figures about the German book and trade magazine market.

The German Book Market at a Glance

Every year, the reference book "Buch und Buchhandel in Zahlen" (Book and Book Trade in Figures) provides compact and comprehensible information about all countable and calculable facts and relationships in the producing and distributing book trade – the second largest book market worldwide.

In her welcome address to the current issue Karin Schmidt-Friderichs, Head of the German Publishers & Booksellers Association, writes:

"The general reluctance to buy does not stop at the book industry. Compared to the previous year, industry sales declined by 1.9 per cent. Stationary trade has regained sales after the period of Covid restrictions, but is still behind pre-pandemic levels."

All the important key figures for the German book market in 2022 are summarised in "Buch und Buchhandel in Zahlen". In its 71st edition, the figures provide a broad overview of the market development of the past year and initial figures for 2023.
